Cody has seen a string of rainy, cold days, but sandwiched between the gloom, Saturday was warm, sunny and a perfect day for track and field.
Hosting the Park County Tri, the Fillies finished with 125 points, while Powell had 122. Worland finished third (47).
Powell won on the boys side (127), the Broncs took second (113) and the Warriors third (92).
“I wasn’t worried because I checked the weather yesterday,” sprinter Haleigh DeLeon said. “I’m glad it’s sunny.”
The Fillies finished with nine first-place finishes.
DeLeon won both the 100 and 200 meter dashes, and finished second in long jump.
“I’m glad I took first,” she said. “My blocks were really good.”
She added she was focused on driving during each event and working on the curve in the 200.
Also on the track, Rachel Sanchez was first in the 1,600
and second in the 800, while Georgia Hitchcock won the 3,200.
“Rachel had two big PRs which was exciting,” coach Bret Engdahl said. “She’s starting to run distance races well.”
In the discus, the Fillies took the top three spots. Erika Larsen finished first with a PR, Ashley Wilson second and Macy McClure third.
Larsen also won the shot put, with sister Emily finishing fourth. Emily would also win the long jump.
Eve Johnson continued her strong performances in the pole vault, winning for the second week in a row.
“She looked like she was jumping good and she said she was feeling good,” Engdahl said.
Winning the high jump, Alannah Gee improved her PR by four inches.
For the Broncs, Brady Erickson finished with three wins, taking the 100, 200 and long jump titles. He pre-qualified for state in the 200, as did Reece Andre, who finished second.
“Reece ran all by himself in the slow heat and ran really nice,” Engdahl said. “That’s the first 200 he’s run.”
Distance runner Bailey Smith won the 800 and 1,600, while Peter Klessens also finished first in the shot put.
Taking second was Owen Oilar in both the 400 and pole vault.
“The 400 is a tough race so I was focusing on staying relaxed and finishing strong,” he said. “I’m happy with the pole vault but not satisfied. That height is a PR, but only by an inch. I know I can jump higher.”
Oilar also ran a leg for the winning 1,600 relay team.
“I like to run the 4x400 better than the open 400 because I’m running as part of a team,” he said. “My split was slower but it felt better.”
Also finishing second was Wyatt Burichka in the 3,200 and Josh Jones in the 800.
The meet was a combined middle school high school meet (See CMS results later this week).
“It was neat to have the middle school kids,” Engdahl said. “They had a great day and it was nice to see them compete.”
Cody travels to Powell on Saturday.
