The Cody boys had seven athletes competing in the Wyoming State Track and Field Championships last Thursday-Saturday in Casper. For four of them teamwork shown through just when they needed it most.

Senior Jared Grenz had been the natural anchor all season – he finished second in the 100 meter at state in a time of 11.24 – and coach Bret Engdahl said at times he had been bailing out the rest of the team on handoffs.

Not at state.

“They got him the stick and they were in fourth and he ran down one guy,” Engdahl said. “That was a great team effort. We always knew they could do it. I’m really proud of them for that.”

The 4x100 relay team of Gaige Arnold, Nathan Whalen, Charlie Beaudrie and Grenz finished third in 43.60 – a personal record for the group.

Grenz, who also finished sixth in the 200 meters in 23.17, was thrilled the Broncs smoothed it all out when it mattered most.

“It was really fun to click with the team and watch everyone go in stride with each other to pull off our fastest time of the year,” he said.

The Broncs finished 12th as a team in their first year in 4A, just behind Laramie and ahead of Riverton. Most of the athletes either hit or came near personal records, but Engdahl said they faced not only the cold and wind, but the might of the state’s best athletes.

“It was just good guys,” he said. “And it was cold, windy and wet.”

As with the girls, Engdahl was impressed with the freshmen who competed for Cody. Drew Trotter was a highlight, finishing 12th in the 110-meter hurdles, just a few spots away from a finals appearance.

Junior transfer Isaac Taylor was also impressive with a 42-01.5 triple jump, good for ninth.

“He had a really good triple jump,” Engdahl said. “He jumped better than he did at regionals, where he got third, and ended up ninth.”

Grenz also finished ninth in the high jump at 5-10. He was just pleased to see the effort from all of the Cody athletes.

“I think the meet went really well as a whole and I think everyone was able to improve even more on the season,” Grenz said. “It was really cool to see all of our hard work pay off.”
