The Cody Legion B team picked up its first wins of the season recently in games against Powell to improve to 2-4 overall.
“I thought we played better in the last two games against Powell,” coach Beau White said. “Our pitchers have been throwing a lot more strikes and not giving up as many free passes as they did earlier in the season.”
Cody 12, Powell 8
Nine runs in the fourth inning helped the Cubs defeat the Pioneers 12-8 on May 16.
Cody didn’t have a single hit in the inning but took advantage of six walks, a hit batter and two Powell errors.
The Cubs also scored two in the second on a single by Dominic Phillips and one in the fifth. The Pioneers scored four in the third and four in the sixth.
Cody finished with two hits from Brady Deming and Phillips.
Trey Thomasson earned the win in relief. He gave up four runs on three hits through 3 innings. Grayson Beaudrie started the game and allowed four runs on three hits through 2 2/3 innings. Ben Reinker closed the game and gave up one hit.
Cody 6, Powell 5
In a nine-inning game on May 23, the Cubs needed an extra inning to earn a 6-5 win.
“We have been getting guys on base and advancing them, but not getting the big hit when we need it,” White said. “If we keep giving ourselves opportunities to score, eventually we will be able to score more runs than we have been.”
Cody scored solo runs in six innings on the way to the win. Tied at five in the 10th, Devon Torczon was hit by a pitch, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball.
Powell went down in order in the bottom of the frame.
Cody’s first run came in the third on two errors and a walk. The Cubs scored runs in the sixth and seventh on errors, another in the eighth on a single by Logan McLeod and the tying run in the ninth when Will Thomasson walked, moved to second on a single by Beaudrie and scored on an error by the center fielder.
“I saw improvement on the defensive side also in the last two games,” White said. “We came from down four in the second game to win in extra innings. We did not have a big inning, but slowly chipped away one run at a time, and our pitching and defense kept us in it.”
The Pioneers scored one run in the second, two in the fourth, and runs in the fifth and seventh.
Cody finished with 12 hits. Will Thomasson went 3-5, McLeod 2-3, Torczon 2-5 and Beaudrie 2-6.
Phillips started the game and gave up three runs on two hits through 4 innings. Trey Thomasson pitched 3 innings and allowed two runs on two hits. Torczon earned the win, giving up no runs on one hit through 3 innings.
