The Cody Legion baseball team is 2-1 after the first two days of the Rapid City Big Stick Tournament in South Dakota.
Cody 7, RC Bullets 2
The Cubs scored all its runs in the first three innings Thursday and then held on late to earn the win.
Cody scored two runs in the first on a triple by Jared Grenz and sac fly by Tristan Blatt. The Cubs added a run in the second on a single by Cody Phillips. In the third they scored four runs on singles by Jared Grenz and Jack Schroeder, triple by Blatt, walk and an error.
Blatt went 2-2, Jared Grenz 2-4 and Schroeder 1-2.
Schroeder started the game and earned the win, going 5 innings and giving up two runs on five hits. Phillips pitched 1 inning and gave up one hit and Ethan Johnston pitched 1 inning and gave up no hits.
Cody 3, Premier, Colo., 2
The Cubs led most of the way in their first game Friday but Premier tied it late and Cody had to retake the lead in extra innings for the win.
The Cubs took a 1-0 lead in the fourth after a Premier error and single by Heston Williams. In the fifth they scored another on a double by Schroeder and single by Johnston.
Premier scored one run in the sixth and tied it in the seventh. They had the go-ahead run on base but Cody would get out of it and the game went into extra innings.
Jared Grenz hit a double to start the eighth and advanced to third on a fly out by Blatt. He scored on a sac fly by Schroeder.
Premier had one walk in the bottom of the frame but Cody would get out of the game with the win.
Schroeder and Johnston went 2-3 at the plate.
Blatt earned the win, giving up no runs or hits in 1 1/3 innings. Heston Williams started the game, going 6 2/3 innings and allowing two runs on seven hits, while striking out 11.
Rapid City Shooters 7, Cody 5
Their second game Friday also went into extra innings but this time Cody was the losing team, falling 7-5 to Rapid City in the 11th inning.
The Cubs scored two runs in the first after a single by Jared Grenz and home run by Blatt to left but then the Cody offense would go silent, while the Shooters took a 4-2 lead by the third.
Down to their last chance, in the bottom of the seventh Devyn Engdahl and Johnston hit singles to start. Phillips then hit a sac fly to score one run and Tyler Grenz a single to tie the game and force extra innings.
Rapid City scored a run in the 10th but Cody answered after an error and two walks.
In the 11th, the Shooters added two more runs and the Cubs weren't able to answer in the bottom of the frame.
Nine Cubs had a hit during the game. Johnston went 1-3, and Phillips, Engdahl and Schroeder 1-4.
Max Williams started the game, giving up four runs on nine hits through 5 2/3 innings. Johnston took the loss, giving up three runs on five hits through 5 1.3 innings.
