Less than 48 hours after a new Stampede Park record was set in bareback riding, cowboy Caleb Bennett of Corvallis, Mont., broke it again, celebrating July 4 with a bigger bang than fireworks.

All the way back on July 2, Oris Larsen of Manitoba scored a 93. Two days later, Bennett topped him with a 93.5 in an event that was filled with one-upmanship in the most dramatic competition of the 100th anniversary celebration of the Cody Stampede Rodeo.

Bennett eclipsed Larsen by a half-point on a horse named Gun Fire.

“Wow!” was Bennett’s first reaction upon hearing his score. “That was a lot of fun.”

The approximately 5,000 fans packing Stampede Park for the finale of the holiday rodeo demonstrated how much fun they were having with loud roars and responses.

Bennett collected just shy of $10,000 for his performance in the $400,000 rodeo that is the richest and most popular one-header rodeo over Cowboy Christmas.

Bennett’s balancing act for eight seconds was the highlight of five days of rodeo excitement at a mostly filled Stampede Park every night since Sunday when Xtreme Bulls and Bullfighters Only kicked off the special century celebration.

The top four in bareback scored at least 90.5 points and the top three in bull riding were also over 90 points. Parker Breding of nearby Edgar, Mont. won the bulls with a Monday ride of 92.5 points. Second went to Stetson Wright of Milford, Utah, who hit 92.

Thursday culminated with Jesse Wright of the large clan of Wrights, posting an 89.5 in saddle bronc, the highest mark of the day. That tied for the championship with Dawson Hay of Woodward, Alberta.

Fans in one of the main performances finally got to see one of the top barrel racing finishes Thursday. Sabra O’Quinn of Ocala, Fla. made her way around the course in 17.07 seconds. She placed second overall to Carly Taylor of Andersonville, Tenn., who clocked in at 17.04 in slack Wednesday. Taylor won $10,819. All other money-winning places were also recorded in slack.
