The crispness and efficiency the Cody Legion baseball team played with during its win on Friday night was sorely lacking on Saturday, but the Cubs still managed to win one of two to improve to 2-1 in the Lions Wood Bat Tourney.
Cody fell to Laurel 6-4 and barely held on to win 12-11 against Douglas. The Cubs had 10 errors between the two games.
Laurel 6, Cody 4
Laurel scored two in the first inning but Cody answered in the bottom of the frame. With two outs, Jared Grenz hit a single, Tristan Blatt walked and Jack Schroeder reached on an error. A single by Heston Williams to left tied the game.
Cody would go silent offensively through the next several innings while Laurel would regain and extend its lead. The Dodgers scored one in the third and fourth and two in the fifth on a wild pitch and error.
The Cubs began to rally in the seventh. Devyn Engdahl, Cody Phillips and Hayden Bronnenberg hits singles to score one run. Tyler Grenz then walked. Jared Grenz hit a sac fly to bring in another but the Cubs left two runners stranded.
At the plate Jared Grenz went 2-4 with a triple, and Engdahl and Bronnenberg 1-1.
Leyva took the loss, giving up six runs, four earned, on eight hits through 5 innings. Bronnenberg pitched 2 innings and allowed no runs or hits.
Cody 12, Douglas 11
In the second game the Cubs again struggled and had six errors, but managed to create enough offense to earn the win.
In the first, Cody scored one run. Jared Grenz hit a single and advanced to third on an error by the left fielder. Blatt then hit a single to bring him in. Cody loaded the bases but wouldn't score again.
The Cats took a 2-1 lead in the second, but Cody answered quickly. Bronnenberg and Alex Evans drew walks and Leyva singled to load the bases. Bronnenberg scored on a passed ball and Evans would come in on a wild pitch. After Tyler Grenz walked, Jared Grenz hit a sac fly to make it 4-2.
Douglas tied the game in the fourth and again Cody answered. Leyva hit a single, Tyler Grenz walked and Jared Grenz hit a sac bunt to advance the runners. Blatt then hit a sac fly to give the Cubs the lead and a single by Jack Schroeder made it 6-4. Engdahl then hit a single, and Max Williams would bring in two on a line drive to left.
The Cats scored one in the fifth and in the bottom of the frame, Tyler Grenz walked and scored on a double by Jared Grenz. Blatt then reached on an error and Schroeder hit a sac fly to center to make it 10-5.
Things almost got away from the Cubs in the sixth. Four errors and two singles scored four runs for Douglas to make it 10-9. But Blatt game in and got back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning.
At bat, Ethan Johnston was hit by a pitch to reach and Cody Phillips hit a double to score him. Phillips would then score on a wild pitch with some heads up base running, coming from second all the way home. If would be a critical run as once again the Cubs would let Douglas get back in the game in the seventh.
An error and three singles made it 12-11, with two on and the go-ahead run on second before Blatt got the final batter to ground out to end the game.
At the plate Jared Grenz went 2-2, Leyva 2-4 and Schroeder and Phillips 1-1.
Max Williams earned the win, giving up five runs on six hits. Tyler Grenz pitched 1/3 of an inning and gave up four runs, none earned, on two hits. Blatt pitched 1 2/3 innings and got the save, allowing two runs on three hits.
Cody closes out the weekend by facing Powell on Sunday at 3 p.m.
