To the editor:

There is no doubt that the Park County Animal Shelter needs a new home. This “no-kill” shelter provides dogs and cats a temporary home until they find a forever family. Unfortunately, many shelters must impose a “time limit” to alleviate overcrowding.

Park County Animal Shelter is a place where hundreds of us have adopted a beloved dog or cat, a place where lost animals are held safely until worried owners arrive and, sadly, a place where some people come to relinquish a pet or drop off abandoned animals. Regardless of the circumstances, we can help give these animals a better life while the shelter is their temporary home.

The current building is beyond repair. A new facility would include a dedicated area for veterinary care and sick animal isolation units, provide modern kennels with safe exercise areas and comfortable adoption or visiting rooms. This “animal adoption center” could become a welcoming place that people want to visit. So many wonderful things could happen there.

Our community needs a new shelter and the shelter needs financial support from the community to raise the funds needed to make it a reality. Together we can build a better shelter and make this area an ever-better place to live.
