Gary W. Smith

Longtime Cody resident Gary W. Smith died May 30, 2019, in Canon City, Colo.

He was born in Billings on Nov. 18, 1937, to George and Isabell Smith.

The family moved to Cody in the 40s. Gary enlisted in B Battery, 1-49FA (Filed Artillery) in 1960. He married Elsie Codenys on Feb. 11, 1961. Gary then joined the Navy in 1962 as a radio operator. After attending college in Billings he went to OCS and became a naval officer with three tours to Vietnam.

After 32 years of service he retired back to Cody. The family owned and operated the Lazy PS motel and Montgomery Wards for a number of years. Gary and Elsie in semi retirement, also worked at Y-Tex before fully retiring.

Gary enjoyed hunting in his younger days but always preferred a good fly rod and a clear stream. He could also be persuaded to play a round or two of bridge. He was a long time member of the Cody Bible Church.

Gary is survived by his son Michael (Julia) of Colorado Springs, Colo., and his daughter Janelle (Gil Angelotti) of Phoenix, Ariz., two grandsons and was soon-to-be a great-grandfather. Also survived by brothers Jordan Smith and Gene Smith, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Elsie and his parents.

Dad will be missed, but now he can be assured that he will once again have that fly rod in hand and enjoy fishing once again with his loving wife Elsie.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at Cody Bible Church on Sept. 21, 2019, at 10 a.m. with refreshments after.
