As work winds down on the pool project in Meeteetse, construction has started on the new pool in Powell.

Changes in the design of the Meeteetse Pool have delayed the opening of that renovated facility until mid-November.

The pool, being remodeled with $2 million from the capital facilities tax and $2 million in State Loan and Investment Board funding, was scheduled to be completed Oct. 22.

“The Joint Powers Board asked for the tile to be extended into the office area and the area around the spa,” Plan One Architect's Dave Wellington said. “It takes time to get the additional tile and to get it installed.

“They also requested a change in the design of the front entrance from brick to aluminum,” he added. “The new look will blend in better with the rest of Meeteetse Schools, but it slowed construction.”

Wellington expects substantial completion in mid-November.

“Once that happens we'll go down and do a punch list,” he said. “The facility then becomes the property of the owners and the contractor will complete anything unfinished at that point.”

The Joint Powers Board hasn't set a date for the official opening of the pool, but Wellington expects it to be within two weeks of completion.

Last week Sletten Construction broke ground on the new Powell Aquatics Center. The completion date is set for January 2010.

Construction of the facility is funded with $7 million in cap tax collections, while another $2 million will fund a permanent operations and maintenance fund. The Powell Pool Committee is raising an additional $2 million for construction.

The third project funded in the $13.2 million package approved by voters in November 2006, the new Park County Public Library, opened Nov. 4. It received $2.2 million in cap tax revenue.
