The Cody tennis teams have put together strong lineups entering regionals this weekend.
In their final week of regular season competition the Broncs avenged a conference loss at home Sept. 16, defeating Powell 4-1. The Fillies lost to Powell 3-2, but it was much closer than in their last meeting.
“We turned the tables against our cross-county rivals,” coach Norm Sedig said. “These results show our improvement and having a solid lineup finally.”
Last weekend the Broncs lost to Gillette and Sheridan 4-1 and 3-2, while the Fillies fell 5-0 to both teams.
Against Powell top singles player Gunnar Lampe won his match, as did Dan Sinner and Jacob Welch in No. 1 doubles, Justin McDonald and David Bank in No. 2 doubles and Nick Mainini and Jake Dunn in No. 3 doubles.
Jill Ross won her No. 1 singles match for the Fillies, as did Christa Munari at No. 2 singles.
In No. 1 doubles Friday, Sinner and Welch beat Gillette's previously undefeated team 6-7(4), 7-5, 7-6(8). The pair won in a third set tie-breaker 10-8.
“This was a classic doubles battle with neither team cracking,” Sedig said. “Both teams were hitting winners and forcing errors. These along with only a small amount of unforced errors were evident in the high caliber play. Many points ended with all four players at the net where we won the showdown and the match.”
On Saturday the pair defeated their Sheridan opponents in three sets.
“Dan and Jacob are becoming a strong doubles team that's got to be reckoned with at regionals and state,” Sedig said.
McDonald and Bank had a big win against Sheridan in No. 3 doubles.
“Justin and David steamrolled,” Sedig said. “They put up a couple bagels winning 6-0, 6-0.”
Cody competes at regionals in Riverton this weekend. Cody is fielding it's strongest lineup of the season for regionals despite the injuries of Welch (knee), Newsome (ankle) and Johnston (shoulder).
“We've never had so many injuries in one season,” Sedig said. “It's weird as some other teams are banged up also. And this is tennis?”
Expecting to get at least a No. 3 seed is Sinner and Welch with a 4-2 record. Manini and Dunn should receive a No. 4 seed with a 3-3 record, as should McDonald and Bank with a 3-3 record.
None of the Fillies will likely be seeded.
“Regionals are always like a new season,” Sedig said. “A fresh opportunity for our players to excel and over-achieve. That's what makes postseason so exciting.
“These teams have faced more adversity than any other year, but they've showed resiliency and courage, plus supporting each other both as close friends and teammates,” he added. “It's been a joy watching their strong character revealed in team cohesion. It will carry us.”
