Cody's young cross country runners got a taste of what to expect this season during the Casper Invitational last Friday.

“It was a typical first trip with a good effort,” coach Scott Shaffer said. “We're young, so many had never run before.”

The Broncs finished sixth. Douglas was first, Kelly Walsh second and Lander third.

Natrona finished first for the girls followed by Worland and Buffalo. Cody didn't field a full team.

Cody's top two runners turned in good performances. Sierra Jech was fifth in 22:36.23 and Ethan Slight sixth in 18:48.04.

“Ethan and Sierra ran comparable times to last year,” Shaffer said.

Elise D'Alessandro took 19th for the Fillies in 24:50.94. Michelle Conner was 21st in 25:07.39 and Ashley Briesmeister 34th in 27:37.06.

“Getting to see Elise and Michelle run and compete on the toughest course we run on was nice to see,” Shaffer said.

The Broncs second finisher was Chase Constantine, who was 24th in 21:22.86. Stephen Overbeeke (26th) was close behind in 21:26.44. JC Egan had a tough race and was 36th in 22:39.89.

“Chase and Stephen had good races,” Shaffer said. “JC didn't have a good race because he had cramps, but we expect him to do better this week.”

Other finishers for Cody were Luke Smith (41st) in 23:10.62, Morgan Owen (45th) in 24:25.93, Josh Kress (46th) in 24:39.67 and Mike Zemke (48th) in 25:13.52.

“For so many it was their first time racing so it was one small step made,” Shaffer said. “We should see some good progress this week because there's room to improve.”

Three middle school runners finished in the top 10. Anne Brinegar won the race in 7:15:64, Taylor Rickard finished fourth in 7:52.01 and Hannah Durham eighth in 8:09.42.

Cody competes in the Billings Invitational on Friday.
