‘Farewell' planned for library closing

This document was published online on Wednesday, August 13, 2008

Farewells to the Park County Library in Cody will be shared by patrons all day Saturday, Aug. 16, with special events planned.

Speeches will begin at 1 p.m. when retired senator Al Simpson and county commissioner Jill Shockley Siggins offer remembrances of the old facility.

The new library in the Park County Complex will open with a ceremony starting at 3 p.m. Oct. 4.

Patrons may check out as many as 60 books Saturday and keep them until the new library opens, librarians said.

The old library will be open 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, with refreshments served 1-4 p.m.

Once the library closes its doors for good, about 60 children who are frequent library patrons have been invited to a “Say Goodnight to the Library” overnight party.

It's the idea of a group of home-schooled children who came to the library weekly throughout the year, Children's Librarian Holly Baker said.

She was able to invite only 60 children and accompanying adults to the overnight event because of space constraints.

People will bring their own sleeping bag and pillow, and there will be a children's pillow fight, cake and pizza party and story reading as well as games to be shared.

" I believe I was in the second grade when I received my first Park County Library card. I was so excited and the books I read opened the world to me. I have never lost my love of reading. It is sad to see the original library closed but I am sure many others will enjoy the new building.
