A medical emergency has forced the Stampede Parade Committee to find a new grand marshal for this year.

Veteran TV and movie actor Wilford Brimley was scheduled to lead the parades Thursday and Friday.

“Wilford had a knee operation recently and has developed gout,” parade committee spokesman Donna Johnson said. “He's been forced to stay in the hospital in Salt Lake City for about a month to recover.”

This is the second time Brimley has cancelled as parade marshal.

“He was supposed to lead the parade in the late 1980s,” Johnson said. “But he had a movie role come up and couldn't come to Cody that week.”

The parade committee has selected Dennis Haugen of Cody to replace Brimley.

“Dennis has appeared in the Stampede Parade for 32 years as Long Tall Uncle Sam,” Johnson said. “He is someone everyone knows and we're glad he's available.”

The parades begin at 9:30 a.m. both days on Sheridan Avenue. The theme is “We Built This City on Boots, Buckles and Broncs.”

" Mr Brimley has committed to the park county region on numerous occasions only to let them down each time. Fortunately, there have always been locals available to pick up after him. Try Buck Taylor next time instead. "

" "uncle sam" needs to learn the true meaning of the 4th of July and not be so critical of a person that is ill. I am sure Mr. Brimley would rather attend the Cody Parade than be laid up in a hospital with the very painful disease, gout.
Mr. Brimley is a stand up gentleman and deserves a lot more respect than "uncle sam" is giving him. "

" Mr. Brimley's excuse was rather "lame" and not need to be invited again.
Kudo's to Dennis...he deserves being the GM and should have been picked as a first choice! "
