Tourists using credit cards get in park free

This document was published online on Wednesday, June 25, 2008

At Yellowstone Park's East Entrance, phones likely have been out of service since Monday, though officials at Mammoth Hot Springs were unaware of a problem until Wednesday.

That may be because the Park Service still was in radio communication with the East Entrance from all points inside Yellowstone, and also has satellite Internet service at the east gate, spokesman Al Nash of Mammoth said Wednesday.

He said paying entrance fees by credit card is not possible without telephone service, so the east gate staff has been allowing people who want to pay by credit card to pass through free.

“We've been waving them through and telling them to pay as they exit the park,” he added. “We trust people,” and want to facilitate their travel.
