Optimist Club sock hop Thursday revives 1950s-60s

The Cody Optimist Club will showcase music and cars of the 1950s-60s on Thursday.

The club's second annual Sock Hop will begin at 5 p.m. at the Stock Activities Center.

“We put this together last year,” said Ken Stockwell of Big Horn Federal Bank. “It was so popular that people wanted us to bring it back.”

Entertainment starts at 5 p.m. with a Dick Clark impersonator spinning records. Headline acts start at 6 p.m. with the arrival of “Brenda Lee.”

She will be followed by Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley, Patsy Cline and Chuck Berry impersonators.

“We encourage everyone to dress in '50s-'60s clothing,” Stockwell said. “Last year we had grandparents dancing with grandchildren.”

An auto show will be on Beck Avenue between the tennis courts and the football field. Cars aren't restricted to '50s-'60s models.

“People can enter any classic car they own,” Stockwell said. “If they own a new Corvette or an old Model T, they are welcome to do so.”

A menu will be provided by the former Bud's Drive-in. It features curly fries, fritos and chili for which the closed drive-in restaurant was famous.

“At 9 p.m. the event will end with all cars cruising Sheridan Avenue,” Stockwell said. “It still will be daylight and will be plenty of fun for everyone.”

Tickets are $10 and are available at area banks and at Hallmark store in Eastgate Center.
