100 highlights from 100 years at CHS

The Enterprise staff talked to many former and current Cody High School students to compile a list of memorable events and people at the school during its first 100 years.
A few of the memorable coaches at CHS include Glenn Mangus, Shad Martoglio, Spike Vannoy, Bill Waller, Paul Sweitzer, John McDougall and Bob Hockley.
Among those who dedicated themselves to teaching students at CHS are Wynona Thompson, Opal Sulcer, Evelyn Shawver, Carl Ruckman, Dorothy Banks, Jim Terry, Mike Johnson, Julie Schwindt, Lawrence Meister, Jack Downing, Ralph Newell, Joe Pomajzl, Dick Scott, Pat Jacobson, Dan White and Mike Riley.
The following events are listed in chronological order.
1. In 1904 the little red school house was built and the school district was officially developed.
2. CHS expanded with construction of a new building in 1909.
3. Helen Wade and Mary McLeary are first students to graduate from CHS in 1909.
4. E.B. Rossiter is first superintendent of Cody Public Schools in the 1910s.
5. An explosion in the chemical laboratory of the high school in 1912 injured several people when a glass jar burst.
6. William Bennett and Milward Simpson chosen as editor and business manager of the annual Torch, previously a quarterly publication, in 1915.
7. The basketball team won the state championship against Worland in 1916.
8. The first Bronc football team of 1921 played on rocks and gravel on the school playground.
9. Damages from a 1921 school fire were estimated at $1,000.
10. The first high school newspaper was published in 1922.
11. Cody's new $90,000 high school building was dedicated in February 1922.
12 The first debate team, orchestra, band and cheerleading squad formed in 1923.
13. In 1927 the senior class furnished the funds for the big “C” which adorns a hillside on the west side of Cody.
14. The first pep squad was formed in 1930 after Minnie Martin led the entire school in yelling and singing in 1930.
15. Fifty-four graduates planned to attend college or preparatory school outside Cody in 1936, more than any previous class.
16. Students participated in Senior Sneak, during which 1937 seniors would disappear at a designated time.
17. The Girls Athletic Association formed in 1941 under the guidance of Jane Wheaton.
18. Former basketball captain Elwood Smith's jersey, No. 20, was retired in 1945 after he was killed in action as a Marine during World War II.
19. Thirteen members of the Class of 1945 served in World War II following graduation.
20. Wrestling team won the state title for six straight years, 1947-52.
21. Students were dismissed early from school after a frozen skunk was left to thaw in the school during the weekend in 1950.
22. After 31 years in the old high school, students moved to the new building in 1953.
23. In 1956 a student-managed Bronc Room, a lounge with a jukebox and soft drink dispenser, is started.
24. Broncs win the 1957 state championship in basketball.
25. Broncs defeated Torrington 15-7 to win the 1958 state football championship.
26. The 1958 Homecoming was postponed one month due to a flu epidemic.
27. Powell students painted the football field “C” to look like a “P” in 1958.
28. CHS' new gym was dedicated and named in honor of Paul Sweitzer, a member of the faculty for more than 33 years.
29. The track team was state champion in 1961.
30. A group of students stole books from the lockers in 1962 and stuffed them in the ceiling and heating vents in the infamous “book caper.”
31. In 1968 volleyball became Cody's first interscholastic girls sport in more than 30 years. Track also started again that year.
32. The $200,000 Stock Natatorium was dedicated in 1968.
33. Several graduating seniors were drafted in 1969 to serve during the Vietnam War.
34. In 1969, Gene Schrader's pants caught fire in math class after he took some phosphorus from the science department and put it in his pocket.
35. The final football game of the season during the 1970's was against Powell. School was let out early and almost 4,000 people attended the games.
36. The Class of 1971 was the final to graduate in Wynona Thompson Auditorium.
37. The CHS band performed two concerts for Expo '74 in Spokane, Wash.
38. First official “streaking” occurred during halftime of the 1975 Homecoming football game.
39. KYDZ, the voice of CHS, went on the air in 1976.
40. Cody defeated Laramie 41-40 to win the 1976 state title in football.
41. The gymnastics team won the 1977 state title.
42. The Bronc golf team won the state championship in 1979.
43. The Filly tennis team won the 1979 state title.
44. Fillies won a second state tennis title in 1980.
45. The Fillies won the state Alpine ski title in 1981.
46. The football stadium was dedicated in memory of C.R. “Spike” Vannoy in 1983.
47. The boys Alpine ski team won back-to-back state titles in 1983-84.
48. The volleyball team defeated Laramie in three games to win the 1985 state title.
49. The Bronc track team won the state title in 1986.
50. Cody beat Rock Springs to win the state volleyball title in 1988.
51. In 1988 students have no side street parking within one block of school.
52. The girls tennis team won the 1989 state championship.
53. The boys Alpine ski team won the 1989 state title.
54. Students enjoy the Senior Bronc Day mud fight at the reservoir during the 1980s.
55. The football team wins the state championship in 1991 with a 25-7 win over Star Valley.
56. The volleyball team defeats Gillette to win the state title in 1991.
57. Many schools cancel baccalaureate services to comply with the Supreme Court's 1993 ruling separating church and state, and the Cody Ministerial Association takes over the tradition.
58. Volleyball reclaims the state title in 1993 with a win over Cheyenne Central.
59. The 1952-era L-shaped part of CHS was razed in 1994 after the school was found to be susceptible to earthquake damage. Only the east wing and the junior high were left standing.
60. Teen Leadership Coalition implements Teen Court in 1996.
61. The new Cody High School is dedicated Nov. 16, 1996.
62. CHS' Equus won best newspaper in the state for the first time in 1996 and has won an additional eight times since.
63. In-School Suspension begins in 1996.
64. CHS band raised almost $90,000 in 1996 to pay its way to the capital for President Clinton's inauguration parade but a selection committee picked Jackson High School to represent Wyoming even though that school had no marching band.
65. In 1997, after receiving national attention, the band was allowed to perform on Pennsylvania Avenue along the parade route in Washington, D.C.
66. KYDZ went off the air in 1998.
67. Bonfire and snake dance were cancelled in 1998 after injuries to a freshman girl during initiation.
68. For the first time, in 1998 parts of the yearbook were published on CD.
69. CHS and Cody Police Department implemented a School Resource Officer in 1998.
70. First computer lab opened in 1998 for students with membership in Change Attitudes Now, a youth anti-drug organization.
71. CHS Wired began broadcasting in 1999.
72. The cheerleading squad won state in 2000 in the non-stunt dance category.
73. Vandals caused about $250,000 in damage after they dumped computers, shattered windows and broke furniture on July 21, 2001.
74. CHS adopted a new 4 1/2 day school week in 2001.
75. The Filly tennis squad won the state championship in 2002.
76. Stock Natatorium closed in 2003 for remodeling to become the Stock Activities Center.
77. Renovation of Sweitzer Gym begins in 2003.
78. After being closed for one year Sweitzer Gym reopens in 2004.
79. Boys Alpine ski team won state in 2004-05.
80. CHS gymnastics ends in 2005.
81. After being considered for elimination in 2005 the boys swim team continues.
82. Outdoor Club was founded in 2005.
83. In 2005 the Bronc Yearbook is number one in 4A and wins All-State honors.
84. LINK Crew started in 2005 to help freshmen transition to high school.
85. The football team broke Buffalo's 26-game winning streak in 2006.
86. Renovation began in 2006 to add new woodshop and ag classrooms and a new cafeteria.
87. The Agriculture Land and Livestock facility on East Sheridan Avenue is completed in 2006.
88. The 2006 Filly indoor track team dominates the field to win the state title.
89. Cody sports and activities reclassified to 3A in 2007.
90. Wynona Thompson Auditorium closed for remodeling in 2007.
91. Brandon and Brian Reavis win at 2007 International Science and Engineering Fair.
92. Filly golf team wins 2007 state championship.
93. Football team defeated Powell in triple overtime during 2007 homecoming.
94. Bonfire was cancelled in 2007 after the snake dance through Wal-Mart resulted in vandalism.
95. Wish Week 2007 raised $16,000 for the Make-a-Wish Foundation
96. Wish Week 2008 beat the previous record and raised $25,000
97. Girls track team won 2008 state championships.
98. Boys track team also won 2008 state championships.
99. Boys soccer team won the state championship the same weekend in 2008.
100. The 100th class at Cody High School graduates May 24, 2008.
