Park closes, reopens Sylvan Pass

This document was published online on Thursday, January 31, 2008

After being closed for a time because of dangerous weather conditions, Yellowstone's Sylvan Pass opened briefly Wednesday, but was scheduled to close again for avalanche mitigation.

Park employees determined that improved weather conditions allowed for safe oversnow travel along the East Entrance road earlier Wednesday, Yellowstone spokesman al Nash said.

But the temporary closure was planned to allow park staff to use the howitzer for an avalanche hazard mitigation operation on a portion of Sylvan Pass.

Though timing was uncertain, park officials anticipated the pass and road would reopen Wednesday afternoon.

" Seen Sylvan Pass for the first time and it is scary when coveed with huge amounts of snow. But it is beautiful too. Nothing like this in Iowa. "
