Magazine touts Cody as ‘town to watch’

This document was published online on Monday, January 21, 2008

Cody appears on a list of 10 “Towns to Watch” in the latest edition of True West magazine.

Other Wyoming towns mentioned in the issue include Cheyenne and Casper, which are named in the “Top 10 True Western Towns of 2008,” and Buffalo, which is listed among the 10 “Towns You Should Know.” The lists are compiled by the magazine’s editors from applicants that preserve the West.

“True West has been really good to Cody,” said chamber director Kim Jones, noting that the magazine spotlighted Cody several times in 2007. “It’s aware of Cody and treats us well.”

While Jones said she’s more than pleased that Cody is in the mix of towns to watch, she has a higher goal.

“I hope to reach the top 10,” she said. “Readers watch out - we’re coming!”

That goal could be helped through the effort of a True West freelance writer and photographer who will be visiting Cody in mid-February during a winter press tour, Jones said.

As a town to be known, the Cody entry says, “Buffalo Bill is all over this town that he helped found in 1895,” according to www.twmag.com. “He built the Irma Hotel in 1902 and named it after his daughter.

“He was the force behind construction of the nearby dam that bears his name in 1905. Even his boyhood home was moved to Cody.

“But the jewel in the crown has to be the Buffalo Bill Historical Center, ‘five museums under one roof’ that form one of the most complete Western collections of any place. The old showman himself would have to be impressed.”

" So Lori, you are independently wealthy then? Cody NEEDS tourists or you have NOTHING THAT PAYS FOR YOUR WAGES! "

" Believe it or not this town is highly dependent on tourist coming to Cody. I think that is awsome!!!! "

" Just what we need - to be on some list that attracts more people that will surely ruin what we revere.....solitude & a lack of populace! "
