The new Canal Park is partially open for community use.

“The trails are open,” committee spokesman Sharon Miller said. “The planting is ongoing as well.

“The work is moving along consistently,'' she added. “Everyone thinks it looks really nice.”

The seating and lighting for the amphitheater have been installed, but the area is not yet ready to host events.

“Right now it has a fence around it to protect the new grass,” Miller said. “Having it open sooner just didn't work out.”

Miller said most of the trees and shrubs around the trails have been planted.

“But we still have areas that need work,” she said. “We are hoping to have everything open by the spring.”

The community will have a chance to participate in the remaining fundraising efforts.

“Soon we'll have a way for anyone who wants to contribute to be able to do so,” Miller said. “It will be the final portion of our fundraising.'
