Mary Mentock

Mary Mentock, 99, of Sheridan died May 13, 2004, at Sheridan Manor.
She was born Jan. 1, 1905, in Dietz, a coal mining camp five miles north of Sheridan, to George and Sophia Mendryk Kuzara. In 1913 the family moved to Montana, living in Roundup and Windham until 1918. They then moved back to Wyoming, and she continued to live at the family home in Dietz.
She married Andrew "Splitz" Mentock on Oct. 25, 1925, at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Monarch. The couple lived in Dietz until 1929 when they moved to Monarch, where Mr. Mentock was employed in the coal mines. They lived in Monarch until the mine closed in 1953. The family then moved to Sheridan, where Mr. Mentock worked in construction until his passing Feb. 24, 1964.
Mrs. Mentock attended school through the sixth grade and then helped her mother care for the family home and business. After her husband's death, she pursued classes to obtain a GED, of which she was proud. She also took classes at Sheridan College. She kept active, doing housework for a number of people. She also worked at election polls for many years.
She enjoyed crocheting, making numerous afghans for children and grandchildren. She enjoyed cooking and baking for her family and friends. Her other interests included gardening, playing cards and bingo. She was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church and the past chairman of the Saint Agnes Circle and past president of the Holy Name Altar and Rosary Society.
She enjoyed being with her family members.
She is survived by her son Ray (Alice) of Cody, daughter Eleanor Christopher of Longmont, Colo., and son Bill of Buffalo, sisters Helen Barello of Sheridan and Charlotte Adamy of Greybull, 10 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and nine great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Anna Eccli and Rose Barbula, brothers Walter, John, Andrew, Joe, Stanley, Mike and Henry Kuzara, and two grandchildren.
A rosary was Sunday at Kane Funeral Home, and Mass of Christian Burial was Monday at Holy Name Catholic Church with Rev. Ron Stolcis officiating. Interment followed at Sheridan Municipal Cemetery.
